Tax Breaks on Vehicles Outweigh Proposed Fee Increase<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n

Prime Minister Gaston Browne<\/a><\/strong> has defended the planned increase in vehicle licensing fees, arguing that motorists<\/a> have already benefited from significant tax concessions<\/strong> when purchasing their vehicles. Speaking on Pointe FM<\/strong>, Browne dismissed criticism of the increase, noting that duty-free exemptions<\/strong> have saved vehicle owners thousands of dollars over the years.<\/p>

\u201cPeople are listening and observing. Someone posted today that a $100 increase per year over the life of a vehicle doesn\u2019t come close to the tax concessions received when purchasing. Be grateful,\u201d<\/em> he said.<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n

The Prime Minister also clarified that the $100 figure was only an example<\/strong>, stating that the final increase could be $200, $300, or even $400 annually<\/strong>, depending on the type of vehicle.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cSerpent and the others want to make a political issue out of people paying maybe $200 more per year, but clearly, if you want more durable roads, you have to pay more,\u201d<\/em> he said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

<\/h3>\n<\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n

Browne explained that the increase in fees is necessary to fund a shift to concrete roads<\/strong>, which last longer in extreme heat and heavy rains<\/strong> compared to asphalt. The funds raised will support the government\u2019s $100 million road improvement plan<\/strong>, which is backed by Antigua Commercial Bank (ACB) and Eastern Caribbean Amalgamated Bank (ECAB)<\/strong>.<\/p>

\u201cWe need to raise money to improve the country\u2019s road network,\u201d<\/em> Browne stated.<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n

He assured that every dollar raised from the new fees would be placed in a dedicated Public Works account<\/strong> to ensure that all funds are spent solely on road construction and maintenance<\/strong>.<\/p>
