Government Revisiting Royal Caribbean\u2019s Shelved Water Park Project<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n

The Antigua and Barbuda government is reconsidering a previously proposed water park project<\/strong> by Royal Caribbean<\/strong>, as discussions continue on ways to boost tourism offerings.<\/p>

Chief of Staff in the Prime Minister\u2019s Office, Lionel Hurst<\/strong>, confirmed that while the project had been put on hold due to the impact of the COVID-19 pandemic<\/strong>, it has not been entirely abandoned.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cThe land is still vacant and can be turned into something useful,\u201d Hurst said. \u201cBut we don\u2019t know if Royal Caribbean<\/strong> will fulfill its obligation. In the meantime, we\u2019re moving on because we need these other amenities to satisfy a demand in the tourism sector.\u201d<\/p>

The water park was initially planned for an area east of Fort James Beach<\/strong>, where Royal Caribbean intended to build attractions for cruise passengers. However, the pandemic forced cruise lines to scale back investment, leading to the project being put on hold.<\/p>

Now, with the tourism industry rebounding, the government is reviewing options for the site, including alternative developments if Royal Caribbean does not proceed.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cWe are looking at ways to enhance Antigua and Barbuda\u2019s tourism product, and what we can do at Fort James will be a valuable addition,\u201d Hurst said.<\/p>

The government has also announced plans to develop a yachting marina at Fort James<\/strong>, signaling renewed focus on expanding leisure and tourism facilities in the area.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

While Royal Caribbean has not confirmed whether it will proceed with the original proposal, officials say discussions remain open for future investment in the site.<\/p>
