Government revenues in Antigua and Barbuda saw an increase in January, bolstered by a strong tourism season, but concerns remain over expenditure levels, according to a Cabinet review of the country\u2019s financial performance.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Chief of Staff in the Prime Minister\u2019s Office, Lionel Hurst, said January is typically one of the best months for revenue collection, with high visitor arrivals contributing to economic activity across the tourism and services sectors.<\/p>

\"\"<\/a><\/div>
\"\"<\/a><\/div>\n\n\n\n

\u201cIn January, we do very well; it is one of the months in which many tourists arrive in Antigua, so business is vigorous,\u201d Hurst said.<\/p>

\"\"<\/a><\/div>\n\n\n\n

\u201cThe hotels, taxi cabs, and other sectors benefit significantly, though there tends to be a slowdown after the first quarter.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

While the increase in revenue was welcomed, government officials discussed strategies to manage spending more effectively. One area under review is travel expenditure, which has been flagged as a significant cost.<\/p>

\"\"<\/a><\/div>\n\n\n\n

\u201cWe expend a significant sum of money each year on travel,\u201d Hurst said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cWe are looking at ways to reduce that by using a government agency instead of private travel agents to arrange bookings.\u201d<\/p>

\"\"<\/a><\/div>\n\n\n\n

Other areas of spending, including infrastructure projects and public sector wages, continue to place pressure on the national budget. Treasury officials presented an overview of revenue streams and the challenges in balancing necessary expenses.<\/p>

\"\"<\/a><\/div>\n\n\n\n

Despite these concerns, Hurst said the government remains optimistic about the financial outlook.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cWe\u2019re in a good place at this time, and the Cabinet was very pleased to learn about that.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The review forms part of ongoing efforts to assess fiscal performance and ensure sustainable economic management as the year progresses<\/p>\n\n\n\n
