Authorities in Antigua and Barbuda will begin removing derelict vehicles from the streets of St. John\u2019s at the end of March, aiming to ease congestion and improve public safety.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Chief of Staff in the Prime Minister\u2019s Office, Lionel Hurst, said the effort is a response to public complaints about vehicles left unattended for extended periods.<\/p>

\"\"<\/a><\/div>\n\n\n\n

\u201cThe expectation is that it will be carried out by the police themselves and the Antigua and Barbuda Transport Board,\u201d Hurst said. \u201cWe\u2019ll start in St. John\u2019s, but I can\u2019t say precisely where.\u201d<\/p>

\"\"<\/a><\/div>\n\n\n\n

Residents have raised concerns that the abandoned cars block narrow streets, making it difficult for vehicles to pass. Some have also become breeding grounds for rodents and other pests.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cThe object is to clear some of those streets so that we can have traffic move more efficiently,\u201d Hurst said. \u201cThese abandoned vehicles sometimes serve as the homes of vermin and rodents, and they pose a security threat to their neighbours.\u201d<\/p>

\"\"<\/a><\/div>\n\n\n\n

Once removed, the vehicles will be stored at a designated site before being processed for disposal. Authorities are considering crushing and stacking them to reduce space requirements, with the possibility of exporting the scrap metal for recycling.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cAt some point, we\u2019re going to be able to export them to places that purchase used metal,\u201d Hurst explained.<\/p>

The move forms part of a broader initiative to improve the capital\u2019s appearance. Officials have also outlined plans to regulate street vending and address other urban management concerns.<\/p>
