Ministers responsible for energy across the OECS visited the Eastern Caribbean Central Bank\u2019s (ECCB\u2019s) award-winning Solar Canopy Project as they met in Saint Christopher (St Kitts) and Nevis on 4 and 5 February to explore the urgent need for a transition to more sustainable energy sources.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The 3rd<\/sup> Meeting of the OECS Council of Ministers was held under the theme: Sustainable Energy: Creating Opportunities for Re-inventing the Economy of the OECS<\/em>. <\/p>

\"\"<\/a><\/div>\n\n\n\n

One of their targeted goals is to achieve 30 per cent renewable energy penetration by 2030.<\/p>

\"\"<\/a><\/div>\n\n\n\n

Speaking on this week\u2019s episode of ECCB Connects<\/em>, ECCB\u2019s Deputy Governor, Dr Valda Henry, says it was an opportune time for the energy ministers meeting as the economies of the region are in dire need of transformation. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Given the geopolitical and social threats, she says, it requires the ECCU region to strengthen its resilience to move forward.<\/p>

\"\"<\/a><\/div>\n\n\n\n

Providing an overview of the ECCB\u2019s greening initiative, Project Manager, Wayne Myers, explains that the greening of the Campus was done in three phases: (i) the generation of electricity by renewable resources; (ii) reduction in consumption by investing in energy efficient products; and (iii) battery storage.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Energy Ministers and other officials who made up the visiting team applaud the ECCB for the steps taken in leading the way for the member governments to follow and pledge their support to the advancement of the region in this collaborative effort.<\/p>

The ECCB\u2019s Solar Canopy Project is part of the Bank\u2019s thrust to become entirely carbon neutral in its own operations.<\/p>

The main objectives of the project include: to lower carbon emissions and to create a demonstration project that other ECCB member countries can emulate towards a faster transition to renewable energy.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
