Antigua and Barbuda to Open School of Agriculture in Bethesda<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n

A new School of Agriculture is set to open in Bethesda as Antigua and Barbuda seeks to attract more young people to farming and strengthen food security.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The initiative, announced by Agriculture Minister Anthony Smith, is a collaboration between the Ministry of Agriculture and the Ministry of Education. It aims to train the next generation of farmers in modern techniques and help reduce the country\u2019s reliance on food imports.<\/p>

With the average age of farmers now over 50, officials say there is an urgent need to encourage younger generations to enter the industry.<\/p>

\u201cThe School of Agriculture in Bethesda will play a key role in securing the future of our food production,\u201d said Mr Smith. \u201cWe need young people to embrace agriculture as a career, and this institution will provide them with the necessary skills to succeed.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The school will combine theoretical education with hands-on training in agribusiness, irrigation management, soil science, and sustainable farming. A strong emphasis will also be placed on the use of technology to improve productivity.<\/p>

The initiative is part of a wider strategy to modernise the agricultural sector, improve market access, and boost local food production. Programmes like the Antigua and Barbuda Agricultural Youth Forum (ABAFY) have already sought to engage young people in farming, and officials say the new school will build on these efforts.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Mr Smith called for support from the private sector, schools, and local communities, stressing that food security is a national issue requiring collective action.<\/p>
