The government is reviewing legislation to prevent companies from avoiding severance and other financial obligations to employees, according to Prime Minister Gaston Browne.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Speaking on Pointe FM, Browne said changes are being considered to ensure businesses that own and operate major enterprises remain responsible for outstanding staff payments, particularly in cases of liquidation or sale.<\/p>

The move aims to close loopholes that allow firms to separate assets from their workforce responsibilities, leaving employees vulnerable.<\/p>

\u201cWe will go to Parliament to change the law so that the entity owning the real estate that generates economic activity is ultimately liable for severance and outstanding staff costs,\u201d Browne stated.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The review follows concerns that some businesses in Antigua and Barbuda, particularly in the hospitality sector, have structured their operations in ways that shield them from financial liabilities when ownership changes. <\/p>

Browne highlighted that companies benefiting from government concessions should also meet their obligations to workers.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
