PM Promises \u2018Substantial\u2019 Improvements to Community Roads in 12 Months<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n

Prime Minister Gaston Browne has pledged significant upgrades to community roads across Antigua and Barbuda<\/strong> over the next 12 months, as part of a broader initiative to improve the country\u2019s infrastructure.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Speaking on Pointe FM<\/strong>, Browne said the government plans to invest $250 million in road repairs<\/strong>, with a focus on residential areas and smaller communities<\/strong> that have long faced issues with poor road conditions.<\/p>

\u201cWe are determined that within the next 12 months, there will be a major improvement in community roads. No one can doubt that there has already been significant work done on the main arteries, but now we are shifting focus to fixing roads in villages and residential areas,\u201d<\/strong> Browne said.<\/p>

<\/h3>\n\n\n\n

To finance the project, the government has decided to increase vehicle registration fees<\/strong>, which will help raise funds to secure a $100 million bond<\/strong> for road construction. Browne said the decision was made to ensure sustained investment in infrastructure without relying on external grants or loans<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The Ministry of Works<\/strong> has already begun repairs in some areas, and Browne assured the public that additional roadwork equipment has been acquired to speed up repairs and maintenance<\/strong>.<\/p>

The state of community roads<\/strong> has been a recurring complaint among residents, particularly in areas outside of St. John\u2019s. While main roads have seen notable improvements<\/strong>, many secondary roads remain damaged, unpaved, or in need of resurfacing<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Browne acknowledged that while it is not possible to fix every road on the island<\/strong>, the goal is to resolve the majority of critical infrastructure issues<\/strong> within the next year.<\/p>

To ensure public accountability<\/strong>, Browne promised that every dollar raised from the increased registration fees would go directly into roadwork<\/strong>.
