Officials say increasing domestic food production is essential to reducing dependence on imports and mitigating potential supply chain disruptions.<\/p>

During the post-cabinet media briefing, Chief of Staff Lionel Hurst emphasized the importance of strengthening food security, especially in light of global trade uncertainties.<\/p>

\u201cWe know we cannot fully feed ourselves, but we must do more to grow what we can,\u201d Hurst said. \u201cWe have the land, and we are making efforts to ensure that resources like water and infrastructure are available to support increased agricultural output.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Diamonds Estate, a government-owned property, spans 200 acres, but only 80 acres are currently under cultivation. <\/p>

The government is aiming to allocate the remaining land to experienced farmers and those interested in expanding production.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

To attract more young people to farming, authorities are considering incentives such as training programs, equipment subsidies, and improved water access. <\/p>

Officials also pointed to the success of local egg production as an example of how strategic planning can reduce reliance on imports.<\/p>

While the government has acknowledged that challenges remain\u2014such as limited rainfall and a shortage of skilled farmers\u2014efforts are underway to support agricultural expansion. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Plans to increase investment in irrigation and farming technology are expected to be discussed further in the coming months.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
