SOURCE: JAMAICA GLEANER- <\/strong>A little over a year after allegedly shooting two young children and killing their father before fleeing Jamaica and crossing the United States-Mexico border, a reputed gang leader was deported last Thursday. Just four days later, he was charged in connection with the crime.<\/p>

The deportee, 33-year-old Rasheim \u2018Shem\u2019 Brown, a resident of Regent Street, Kingston 14, was one of four individuals handed over to local authorities at Norman Manley International Airport in Kingston after his arrival and processing.<\/p>

\"\"<\/a><\/div>\n\n\n\n

On Monday, Brown was formally charged with the murder of 55-year-old Mark McKenzie. In addition to murder, he faces charges of two counts of wounding with intent, possession of a prohibited weapon, unauthorised possession of ammunition, and using a firearm to commit a felony.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

According to reports, on Wednesday, December 6, 2023, around 3 a.m., McKenzie and his two sons were sleeping in their one-bedroom home when Brown and other armed men entered and opened fire. <\/p>

McKenzie was shot in the face and chest, while his eight-year-old son was shot below the buttocks. The four-year-old child was also injured, sustaining two gunshot wounds to the leg and one to the arm. Both children were rushed to the Bustamante Hospital for Children for treatment.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The attack is believed to be connected to ongoing gang violence in the Hannah Town area of Kingston Western.<\/p>

Brown, who was escorted from the airport last week wearing a face covering, was charged after a questioning session in the presence of his attorney.<\/p>

He is believed to be the enforcer of the Golden Heights Gang, which operates in Denham Town. This gang is also linked to the notorious Scream Corner Gang based in Kingston Western.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

In an interview with The STAR <\/strong>following the shooting, McKenzie\u2019s older daughter described her father as a dedicated parent, especially to his young sons.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cThis man dedicated his life to his two baby dem, not even mi weh a di bigger one. When you see him you see him two bwoy pickney dem. To how dem live, you wonder if him is a madda,\u201d she said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

She also revealed the psychological toll the incident had on their family, particularly her 11-year-old daughter, who had lost her biological father to gang violence four years prior. The family sought counselling from the Victim Services Division of the Ministry of Justice.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Assistant Commissioner of Police Michael Phipps, the commander for Area Four, stated that Brown\u2019s arrest and charge demonstrate the police\u2019s commitment to pursuing individuals who flee Jamaica after committing serious crimes.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The 56 deportees who arrived in Jamaica last Thursday were the first batch sent back since US President Donald Trump returned to office on January 20. Their deportation was part of a process initiated under the previous Biden administration, with deportation flights on the last Thursday of each month.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Trump has vowed to pick up pace with mass deportation of undocumented immigrants.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Last week, Prime Minister Dr Andrew Holness had a warning for returning to Jamaica with criminal intent: \u201cYou will either meet a judge or your maker if you come back to Jamaica and violate our laws and create havoc. … I know that there are many who will be returning to Jamaica coming back to lovely communities like these rural areas and they may attempt to set up gangs, get involved in scamming and undermine the values of the communities that they return to. We will not tolerate that.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n
