The government of Antigua and Barbuda is set to launch a new initiative aimed at addressing the shortage of skilled heavy equipment operators by providing young people with training and stipends.<\/p>

Prime Minister Gaston Browne announced the plan during his radio programme, stating that the scheme will offer hands-on training in operating heavy-duty machinery, including graders, excavators, and rollers. The initiative is expected to help accelerate the country\u2019s road infrastructure projects while also creating employment opportunities for young people.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Mr Browne said the shortage of trained operators has slowed roadworks and other construction projects, prompting the government to step in with a workforce development plan.<\/p>

\u201cWe have invested millions in new road construction equipment, but we need trained operators to maximise their use,\u201d he said. \u201cWe are introducing a programme where young people will receive stipends while they train with experienced professionals in the field.\u201d<\/p>

The training will be conducted in collaboration with heavy equipment owners and contractors, who will help participants gain practical experience.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Once trained, the new operators will have opportunities to work on national infrastructure projects, including the government\u2019s $100 million road improvement programme<\/strong>.<\/p>

\u201cThis is about equipping our people with the skills they need to build careers while also ensuring that our investment in infrastructure is fully utilised,\u201d Mr Browne added.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Industry stakeholders have welcomed the initiative, noting that the construction sector has long struggled to find qualified operators. Some have suggested that the training be expanded to include certifications that could allow workers to seek employment regionally.<\/p>

The programme is expected to be finalised in the coming weeks, with a full rollout planned by March. The government has pledged to ensure that those who successfully complete the training will have opportunities for employment, either within public works projects or in the private sector.<\/p>
