Antigua and Barbuda Coast Guard to Receive New Gunboat for Enhanced Security<\/strong><\/p>

A new gunboat is expected to arrive in Antigua and Barbuda within two weeks as part of efforts to strengthen maritime security, Prime Minister Gaston Browne has announced.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Speaking on his weekly radio programme, Mr Browne said the vessel would enhance border protection, improve the country\u2019s capacity to tackle illicit activities, and support search and rescue missions.<\/p>

\u201cThis new asset will significantly improve our ability to patrol our waters and deter illegal activities such as drug trafficking and poaching,\u201d he said.<\/p>

The government has been working to modernise its security infrastructure, particularly in response to regional concerns over smuggling and unauthorised fishing.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The Coast Guard, which currently operates a fleet of patrol boats, has faced challenges monitoring the country\u2019s extensive maritime borders. Authorities say the new gunboat will allow for faster response times and improved surveillance capabilities.<\/p>

Antigua and Barbuda has increased investment in national security in recent years. Measures have included upgrades to radar systems, improved emergency response equipment, and strengthened partnerships with regional and international security agencies.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Officials have not disclosed the gunboat\u2019s specifications but say it will be equipped for high-risk maritime operations.<\/p>
