The government of Antigua and Barbuda has confirmed that planning for the Barbuda seaport and business hub is ongoing, with efforts focused on identifying the best location for a new pier to support direct shipping to the island.<\/p>

Speaking at Thursday\u2019s Cabinet press briefing, Chief of Staff Lionel Hurst said while no new updates emerged from this week\u2019s meeting, discussions remain active behind the scenes to ensure the project\u2019s success.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cThe objective is to ensure that the economy of Barbuda produces sufficient jobs and opportunities so that Barbudans do not have to leave their island in search of opportunities,\u201d Hurst said.<\/p>

The planned seaport is expected to reduce Barbuda\u2019s dependence on cargo shipments being routed through Antigua, a process that increases costs for businesses and residents. A dedicated facility would allow shipping vessels to offload goods directly in Barbuda, improving efficiency and lowering expenses.<\/p>

\u201cNevis is much smaller than Barbuda and has a population of 15,000. Barbuda has a population of 1,500,\u201d Hurst noted. \u201cOur objective is to ensure that young families who want to remain in Barbuda can do so because there are economic opportunities available.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Hurst confirmed that environmental and engineering consultations are ongoing to determine the most suitable site for the seaport. The government has not set a timeline for completion but maintains that the project remains a priority in its broader efforts to support Barbuda\u2019s economic development.<\/p>
