The reopening of the Boys\u2019 Training School in Antigua, initially expected in January 2025, has been delayed as authorities work to address staffing and equipment shortages.<\/p>

During Thursday\u2019s Cabinet press briefing, Chief of Staff Lionel Hurst confirmed that while progress has been made, additional resources are required before the facility can resume operations.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cThey needed some equipment as well as some furniture, and they needed to employ a few more people to ensure that the boys are adequately supervised,\u201d Hurst said.<\/p>

The institution, which serves as a rehabilitation center for at-risk youth, was previously under the Ministry of Health but has now been placed under the Ministry of Social Transformation, headed by Senator Rawdon Turner. The change in oversight is expected to streamline efforts to provide the necessary support services for the facility.<\/p>

Hurst did not provide a revised timeline for the reopening but assured that efforts are ongoing to complete the necessary preparations.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cThere is a need for security within the facility as well, so every effort is being made to ensure that the Boys\u2019 Training School is completed, well outfitted, and does not pose a security risk\u2014not to those who reside there nor to those who live in its neighborhood,\u201d he said.<\/p>
