Government move to address squatting issue in Jennings<\/p>

ST. JOHN\u2019S, Antigua and Barbuda \u2013 27th January 2025\u2026 Prime Minister Hon. Gaston Browne, accompanied by members of his Cabinet, including the Parliamentary Representative for the St. Mary\u2019s North Constituency, Sir Molwyn Joseph, visited Jennings (Hermitage Road) on Monday to address concerns surrounding squatting on crown lands in the area.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Public Works Minister, Hon. Maria Browne, informed the Prime Minister that a significant issue was the construction of homes within a known watercourse and a flood-prone zone. She highlighted that the location is unsuitable for any type of development due to the risk of severe flooding.<\/p>

Minister Molwyn Joseph emphasized the urgency of addressing the matter, noting that there is significant danger posed to the homeowners and their families. He explained that a major watercourse, situated about 100 feet from the main road, causes extensive flooding in the area during heavy rains due to runoff from the surrounding hills.<\/p>

After discussions, including contributions from Agriculture and Lands Minister Hon. Anthony Smith , Urban Transformation Minister Hon. Rawdon Turner, chairman of the Development Control Authority Maurice Merchant and Chief Town and Country Planner Frederick Southwell, it was agreed that the immediate solution would involve relocating the squatters to another community.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Prime Minister Browne informed the homeowners of the government\u2019s decision, which they welcomed and appreciated. Minister Molwyn Joseph has been tasked with identifying suitable lands for the relocation of the approximately twelve affected households. <\/p>
