NATIONAL VOCATIONAL REHABILITATION CENTRE FOR PERSONS WITH DISABILITIES (NVRCD), joined with the rest of the world as it celebrated theInternational Day for Persons with Disabilities with a march through the streets of St. John\u2019s.<\/p>

\"\"<\/a><\/div>\n\n\n\n

The March attracted seventy (70) persons and began at 1 pm\nat the St. George the Fifth Grounds and ended at the Botanical Gardens with a\nshort ceremony. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

In attendance were<\/g> Assistant Secretary of HealthInstitutions,\u00a0 Suzanne Lake, cricket icon, Sir Curtly Ambrose who was happy to join the march and referred to the community as persons with certain challenges rather than \u201cdisabled;\u201d former Director of Sports, Mervin Richards and other Ministry of Health Officials.<\/p>

\"\"<\/a><\/div>\n\n\n\n

The highlight of the event was a poem written by Secretary of the NVRCD, Valarie Davis. The poem was based on the international theme for World Disability Day 2018:<\/p>

\"\"<\/a><\/div>\n\n\n\n

DISABLED AND EMPOWERED<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Empowering persons\nwith disabilities and<\/p>

\"\"<\/a><\/div>\n\n\n\n

Ensuring\ninclusiveness and equality,<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Will make for better\nsociety.<\/p>

\"\"<\/a><\/div>\n\n\n\n

Let us continue the\nfight for total accessibility,<\/p>

\"\"<\/a><\/div>\n\n\n\n

And for the\nadvancement of the rights and<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Wellbeing of all\npersons with a disability.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Promoting,\nempowerment means more employment,<\/p>\n\n\n\n

For all those\ndisabled person who are affected.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

We need investment in\nhealth-care, nutrition and education,<\/p>\n\n\n\n

As well as access to\nsociety for social and political participation<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Being disabled does\nnot define anyone.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

As a matter of fact\nit\u2019s a part of the human condition.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

To be empowered will\nallow us to take<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Advantage of\nopportunities,<\/p>\n\n\n\n

And readily embrace\nour civic responsibilities<\/p>\n
