George Wehner Vows to Revitalize Parham Town and Harbor, Promising Inclusive Development<\/h3>\n\n\n\n

Parham, Antigua and Barbuda<\/strong> \u2013 United Progressive Party (UPP) candidate George Wehner pledged to revisit a development plan for Parham Town and Harbor created by the Organization of American States (OAS) during a rally at Market Street. He promised to implement the plan to ensure the revitalization of the area, making it accessible and beneficial to all residents rather than a select few. \u201cThere is room at the table for all of us, not just the elite,\u201d Wehner declared, vowing to protect public lands from privatization.<\/p>

Wehner, addressing a lively crowd, emphasized his commitment to transforming the constituency and criticized the Antigua Labour Party (ALP) for prioritizing personal enrichment over community welfare. Highlighting Parham\u2019s historical significance as one of Antigua and Barbuda\u2019s oldest towns, he decried the neglect of the market and other local infrastructure. \u201cInstead of integrating the market into the economic development of the community, it has been left to deteriorate,\u201d he said, pledging to make the market a thriving hub for local commerce.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The UPP candidate reflected on his family\u2019s legacy, recounting how his great-uncle, George Wehner, and former MP Joseph Myers collaborated in the 1950s to combat illiteracy through night schools and adult education programs. He vowed to honor their efforts by advocating for the Parham Primary School to be named after Myers and by working to improve educational opportunities for all. \u201cEducation lifts poor people out of poverty,\u201d Wehner stated.<\/p>

Wehner also criticized his opponent, Rawdon Turner of the ALP, accusing the ruling party of nepotism and resource mismanagement. He alleged that Turner and other ALP leaders were focused on enriching themselves at the expense of the people. \u201cWe cannot allow one family to control the resources of Antigua and Barbuda,\u201d Wehner said, urging residents to reject what he described as a self-serving administration.<\/p>

The candidate called for enhanced support for local fishermen and the blue economy, highlighting the poor state of infrastructure in Parham and the neglect of government facilities. \u201cOur fisherfolk deserve better,\u201d Wehner declared, promising to advocate for improved opportunities in the community.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

UPP members, including MP Sherfield Bowen and former political leader Harold Lovell, joined Wehner at the rally. They echoed his calls for change and urged constituents to support his bid for the St. Peter seat in the upcoming by-election. Bowen described Wehner as a \u201cforceful advocate\u201d who would bring meaningful change, while Lovell pointed to the ALP\u2019s alleged failures in agriculture and infrastructure as reasons for voters to reject the incumbent administration.<\/p>
