Harold Lovell, former leader of the United Progressive Party (UPP), has urged residents of St Peter to repeat the political upset of January 2023 by rejecting the Antigua and Barbuda Labour Party (ABLP) in the upcoming by-election. Speaking at a rally in Pares, Lovell reminded voters of their historic decision to break with tradition and vote for independent representation, calling on them to stand firm in their convictions.<\/p>

\u201cSt Peter made history last year, showing the Labour Party that neglect, disrespect, and abuse would no longer be tolerated,\u201d Lovell told supporters. \u201cThis by-election is an opportunity to reinforce that message.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Lovell endorsed UPP candidate Captain George Wenner, describing him as a man of principle and character. He contrasted Wenner with the ABLP\u2019s candidate, Rawdon Turner, accusing the latter of prioritizing personal gain over public service. \u201cSt Peter deserves a fighter, someone who will stand up for the people, not a representative who will bow to the Labour Party\u2019s agenda,\u201d Lovell said.<\/p>

During his address, Lovell also criticized the economic policies of Prime Minister Gaston Browne\u2019s administration, claiming they had burdened citizens with higher taxes and increased costs at the supermarket. \u201cThey are boasting about economic achievements, but at whose expense? The people of St Peter must send a clear message: \u2018Take your hand out of our pockets,\u2019\u201d he said.<\/p>

Lovell highlighted the importance of consistent and dedicated representation for St Peter, which he argued had been neglected by successive ABLP governments. \u201cThis constituency has been taken for granted for too long. St Peter needs someone who will advocate tirelessly for its residents,\u201d he stated.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Urging voters to rally behind Wenner, Lovell reiterated the UPP\u2019s commitment to putting the needs of the people first. \u201cWe need a leader who will not flinch in the face of challenges, who will serve selflessly and fight for better opportunities for this community,\u201d he declared.<\/p>

The by-election, scheduled for January 14, 2025, comes at a critical time for St Peter.
