Dear Editor,<\/strong><\/p>

\"\"<\/a><\/div>\n\n\n\n

I seek your indulgence to address a recent incident involving a close personal friend who has been subjected to a frontal, personal, and defamatory attack by an individual I shall not dignify by naming. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

This attack questioned my friend’s professional advancement upon qualifying as a Barrister and Solicitor at Law. While I will not repeat the baseless allegations, I did ask my friend whether legal action was being considered\u2014a question that will be answered in due course.<\/p>

\"\"<\/a><\/div>
\"\"<\/a><\/div>\n\n\n\n

What stood out to me was the attacker\u2019s reference to my friend as a “Journalist Turn Lawyer.” <\/p>

\"\"<\/a><\/div>\n\n\n\n

An interesting expression indeed, as I am unaware of anyone who advances their career merely by “turning.” Growth and success are achieved through hard work, commitment, intelligence, and the rigorous fulfillment of academic and professional requirements\u2014not by some whimsical transformation akin to fairy tales of frogs kissed into princes.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

My friend has chosen not to respond publicly, as descending into a public spat is not their style. However, I feel compelled to make a few observations. <\/p>

\"\"<\/a><\/div>\n\n\n\n

No one simply “turns” into a lawyer. Instead, they embark on a demanding journey that requires earning a law degree\u2014often with distinction\u2014and dedicating an additional two years to rigorous legal training to obtain a Legal Education Certificate. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Legal education in the Caribbean, I am informed, is both costly and reserved for those who demonstrate exceptional aptitude and determination.<\/p>

\"\"<\/a><\/div>\n\n\n\n

It is also worth noting that my friend, who was fearless and impactful in the field of journalism despite lacking formal qualifications in that domain, successfully transitioned into the esteemed legal profession. <\/p>

\"\"<\/a><\/div>\n\n\n\n

This achievement speaks volumes about their versatility, dedication, and resilience. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Furthermore, I am reliably informed that they have been successful in every matter brought before the courts during their two years at the bar.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Achievements such as these are not born of “turning,” but through dedication and excellence. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

I also understand that my friend has paid particular attention to two areas of law: Copyright Law (Intellectual Property Law) and the Law of Defamation (Tort Law). A word to the wise should suffice.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Let us respect and celebrate the hard-earned milestones of others rather than attempting to belittle their accomplishments.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
