The United Nations\u00a0 Development Fund has ranked Antigua and Barbuda as number\u00a0one in the Organisation of Eastern Caribbean States (OECS) it’s 2018 Human Development Index.<\/p>

The Bahamas and Barbados are the top Caribbean Community (CARICOM) countries in the 2018 Human Development Indices and Indicators.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Haiti is the lowest ranked CARICOM country, and is included among countries described by the UNDP as belonging to the \u201cLow Human Development\u201d index.<\/p>

According to the \u201cHuman Development Indices and Indicators: 2018 Statistical Update,\u2019 Norway is the highest ranked country under the label \u201cVery High Human Development\u201d index for the year 2017.<\/p>

\"\"<\/a><\/div>\n\n\n\n

Most of the 14-member CARICOM countries with the exception of Guyana and Haiti are included in that index with Guyana listed in the \u201cMedium Human Development\u201d category.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

According to the UNDP, the Bahamas is the highest ranked CARICOM country at 54 out of 189 countries surveyed. It has Human Development Index (HDI) of 0.807, with a life expectancy rate of 75.8 years and a gross national income (GNI) of US$26.681.<\/p>

Barbados is second among Caribbean countries with ranking of 58 and a HDI of 0.800, a life expectancy of 76.1 and a GNI of US$15,843.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The oil-rich twin island republic of Trinidad and Tobago is ranked 69th<\/sup> with a HDI of 0.784, a life expectancy rate of70.8 and a GNI of US$28,622.<\/p>

It is followed by Antigua and Barbuda at 70 with a HDI of 0.780, a life expectancy rate of 76.5 and a GNI ofUS$20,764.<\/p>

The twin island federation of St. Kitts-Nevis ranked at 72 with a HDI of 0.778, a life expectancy of 74.4 and a GNI of YS$23,978 while Grenada is placed at number 75 with a HDI of 0.772, a life expectancy rate of 73.8 and a GNI of US$12,864.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

St. Lucia sits at position 90 with a HDI of 0.747, a life expectancy rate of 75.7 and a GNI of US$11,685 followed by Jamaica at 97 with a HDI of 0.732, life expectancy at 76.1 and a GNI of US$7,846.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

St. Vincent and the Grenadines is ranked at number 99 with a HDI of 0.723, a life expectancy of 73.3 and GNI of US$10,499.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Suriname is pegged one rank lower with an HDI of 0.720, a life expectancy of 78.5 and a GNI of US$13,366, while Dominica, which was battered by Hurricane Maria last year is ranked at 103 with a HDI of 0.715, a life expectancy rate of 78 and a GNI of US$8,344.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Belize follows at number 106 with a HDI of 0.708, a life expectancy rate of 70.6 and a GNI of US$7, 166, while Guyana, the only CARICOM country in the Medium Human Development is ranked at 125 with a HDI of 0.654, a life expectancy of 66.8 and a GNI of 7,447.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Haiti, the only French-speaking CARICOM country is ranked 168 with a HDI of 0.498, a life expectancy of 63.6 and GNI of US$1,665.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The UNDP acknowledged that most people today live longer, are more educated and have more access to goods and services than ever before.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cEven in low human development countries people\u2019s human development has improved significantly. But the quality of human development reveals large deficits,\u201d it said, noting however that \u201cliving longer does not automatically mean more years spent enjoying life.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cBeing in school longer does not automatically translate into equivalent capabilities and skills. So shifting the focus towards the quality of human development will be important in monitoring future progress,\u201d it said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

It said that progress is not linear or guaranteed, and crises and challenges can reverse gains. Countries experiencing conflict show HDI losses, which can be felt for generations. Investment in human security to break cycles of vulnerability and conflict is essential to reduce vulnerabilities and sustain progress.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cGoing beyond the average achievements, the IHDI and disaggregated assessments reveal large inequalities across human development dimensions. Persistently high inequality is a fundamental challenge to sustaining future progress in human development,\u2019 the UNDPadded.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

It said that when the HDI is adjusted for inequalities, the global HDI value falls 20 per cent.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cDisparities between women and men in realizing their full potential stand as a great barrier to human development progress, holding back half the world\u2019s population. Women have a lower HDI value than men across regions and face particular barriers to empowerment all through life.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cProgress in human development cannot be sustained without addressing environmental degradation and climate change, which the recent progress on the HDI has exacerbated. For human development to become truly sustainable, the world needs to break with business-as-usual approaches and adopt sustainable production and consumption patterns,\u201d the UNDP added.<\/p>\n
