\u201cMany know me as Asot\u2019s niece, but to me, Uncle Asot was not just my uncle and godfather\u2014he was like a second father,\u201d she began. \u201cHis influence shaped how I see the world and my place in it.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Marissa described how her uncle\u2019s teachings helped her understand her identity as a proud daughter of Antigua and Barbuda. Reflecting on her earliest memories, she recalled a powerful lesson from her uncle: \u201cLet me tell you something, child\u2014we would not be who we are today if it were not for the people of Antigua opening their arms and their houses to our great-grandparents. You must always remember that and always be grateful.\u201d<\/p>

These words, she shared, became a cornerstone of her identity. \u201cThough we are of Lebanese descent, Uncle Asot instilled in me the undeniable truth: I am Antiguan,\u201d she said.<\/p>

As a child, Marissa was exposed to her uncle\u2019s deep connection with his community and his passion for public service. She fondly remembered participating in his campaigns, including reciting key points from his manifesto during the 2004 elections at just seven years old.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cI enjoyed the bounce castles and mechanical rides at his Christmas parties alongside the children of St. Peter,\u201d she said. \u201cBut even then, I was learning about the value of service and the strides the Labour Party made for this country.\u201d<\/p>

She also recalled family Sundays at Dry Hill, where her uncle hosted guests ranging from local leaders like Sir Lester Bird to international dignitaries. \u201cAs an only child, I often found myself sitting on the gallery with adults, listening to conversations that expanded my worldview,\u201d she said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Despite growing up with privilege, Marissa emphasized that her uncle taught her humility and the importance of service. \u201cThough a silver spoon may have been on my place setting, I learned to serve with it,\u201d she shared. \u201cWhether it was fetching drinks for guests or helping with chores, Uncle Asot ensured I understood the value of respect and hospitality.\u201d<\/p>

These lessons, she said, shaped her personal and professional journey. Now pursuing a surgical residency, she credits her ability to connect with people and her unwavering dedication to her uncle\u2019s influence.<\/p>

Marissa spoke about her uncle\u2019s steadfast support for her dreams. \u201cUncle Asot always encouraged me to dream big,\u201d she said. \u201cAfter my parents, he was my biggest supporter, often outshining them in the publicity department.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

She humorously recalled refraining from sharing some of her medical school accomplishments with him, knowing he would circulate them widely. \u201cHis love language was giving, and few things brought him as much joy as seeing happiness in others,\u201d she added.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Marissa reflected on her uncle\u2019s love for life and generosity. \u201cHe introduced us to the finest experiences, whether in Miami, New York, London, or Berlin,\u201d she said. \u201cEven when he had no desire to see a show or eat at a restaurant himself, he delighted in ensuring we experienced it.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Through these acts, she learned not only to live life fully but also to appreciate the joy of giving and sharing with others.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

In her closing remarks, Marissa expressed her gratitude for the indelible mark her uncle left on her life. \u201cUncle Asot, thank you for being a guiding force in my life. Your lessons, your love, and your belief in me have shaped the person I am today,\u201d she said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

While acknowledging the world\u2019s loss of a brilliant leader, she reflected on her personal loss. \u201cI promise you, Uncle Asot, your legacy will live on in me, your family, and in the hearts of everyone you touched. May you rest in peace knowing you made this world better for all of us.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n
