The Antigua and Barbuda Port Authority is prioritizing staff training to enhance competitiveness and foster career growth, according to Senator Mary-Claire Hurst, Chairperson of the authority.<\/p>

Speaking during the Senate debate on the 2025 Appropriation Bill, Hurst emphasized the importance of equipping staff with the skills needed to excel in an evolving global market. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cWhen you are trained, you can compete,\u201d she said, underscoring her commitment to developing the workforce.<\/p>

Hurst acknowledged the risks associated with investing in training, as employees become more marketable and may pursue opportunities elsewhere. <\/p>

\"\"<\/a><\/div>\n\n\n\n

However, she maintained that the benefits outweigh the challenges.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cYou run a risk when you train your staff because they become marketable, but it is something I intend to do,\u201d she stated.<\/p>

The Port Authority has also engaged with local schools to expose students to port management as a viable career path. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cWe have adopted a school in the area so they can have an opportunity to come down to the port to see that port management can be a career,\u201d Hurst explained.<\/p>

The Chairperson noted that the authority has reached a stage where it is recognized as an attractive place to work. \u201cWe have brought the Antigua and Barbuda Port Authority to a stage where Antiguans really want to be a part of it,\u201d she said.<\/p>
