Opposition Senator Alex Browne has sharply criticised the government over what he described as the poor state of roads across Antigua and Barbuda, calling for immediate action to address the situation.<\/p>

Speaking during the budget debate in the Senate on Tuesday, Senator Browne outlined numerous examples of deteriorating infrastructure, including key community roads and routes to tourist attractions.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

He described Paradise Road in Piccadilly, his hometown, as \u201ca minefield\u201d that causes discomfort for drivers and damages vehicles. \u201cWhen I think of paradise, I think of smooth roads, not ones that make you thankful for having all your teeth intact,\u201d he said.<\/p>

\"\"<\/a><\/div>\n\n\n\n

Tourism was a key focus of Senator Browne\u2019s remarks. He pointed to the access road leading to Devil\u2019s Bridge, a popular tourist site, as an example of how road disrepair is harming Antigua\u2019s image.<\/p>

\u201cTaxi drivers dread taking visitors there because the roads are so bad,\u201d he said, adding that the condition of such routes undermines efforts to promote the country as a premier destination.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Major highways also came under scrutiny. Senator Browne criticised the state of All Saints Road and the airport access road, which he described as \u201ca disaster\u201d during wet weather.<\/p>

\u201cLarge potholes that resemble craters are not what residents or visitors should have to contend with,\u201d he added.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The senator directed his criticism at the Public Works Department, urging officials to take immediate steps to repair roads across the country. <\/p>

He also highlighted the issue of newly paved roads being left in disrepair after infrastructure work, describing the delays in fixing them as \u201cunacceptable.\u201d<\/p>

\u201cWe need roads that support economic activity and daily life, not ones that destroy people\u2019s cars,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Senator Browne\u2019s remarks reflect growing frustration among residents over the state of the country\u2019s infrastructure. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

He argued that poor road conditions not only inconvenience drivers but also tarnish the nation\u2019s image and limit opportunities for development.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

He concluded by calling on Public Works Minister Maria Browne to address the issue urgently. \u201cThe people deserve better, and the government must act,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n
