Senior\nExtension Officer at the Ministry of Agriculture, Mr. Owolabi Elabanjo said it\nis time for farmers to approach their livelihood as serious business as any\nother.<\/p>

He said that\ntoo often, a number of persons tend to get involved in the farming sector when\nall other business opportunities fail.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

He made the\npoint at the Second Panel Discussion hosted earlier this week by the Ministry\nof Agriculture at the Multipurpose Cultural Center, as part of extended\nactivities being held in recognition of World Food Day, which was officially\nobserved on October 16th<\/sup>.<\/p>

Mr. Elabanjo\nsaid that if people look at agriculture as a sustainable business venture rather\nthan a last resort, tremendous benefits can be realized.<\/p>

\"\"<\/a><\/div>\n\n\n\n

\u201cPeople are\ntaking agriculture as a last resort, for instance, like if they lose their job\nat the hotel or the supermarket or the company closed down and things like\nthat. We are now saying that our actions will determine the future of the\nagriculture industry. You have to realize that agriculture is a business and as\nwith any business that you invest in, you must be thinking of a profit and\nhence for any business to get started,  you must have a business plan; what do you\nwant to grow? where is your market? where is your input, what it is going to\ncost you.? You must know the answers to all these things before starting your\nbusiness,\u201d Elabanjo maintained.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

He also touched on the issue of agricultural lands, noting that the way in which land for agriculture was granted in the past has changed.<\/p>

He said persons\nseeking farm lands must have a business plan and prove to the ministry that\nthey have everything in place to get the ball rolling.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

According to\nElabanjo,  in the past, many persons have\nleased lands from the government and have done nothing with it for years.\nAccording to Mr. Elabanjo, this cannot be allowed to continue.<\/p>

\u201cYou want\nland?  you come with your business plan\nthen we can move on from there. It is not a thing to play around with. If you\ndon\u2019t plan very well before the business gets going, you will be out of\nbusiness before you know it.  You have to\nmake your business sustainable for the future. For months, some people have\nreceived lands and for months\/years ,they have done little or nothing because\nthey don\u2019t have money.\u201d<\/p>

He said that\nthe Extension Division will continue to share information with farmers and\nconduct training programmes on Good Agricultural Practices, but he also\nbelieves that it\u2019s the obligation of farmers to know what is needed to drive\nthe business and find ways to get it done, as the country moves towards\nachieving the goals of zero hunger and food security for all.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

 \u201cSo we are telling people today, for us to be\nzero hunger free, for us to be sustainable, for us to have food on everybody\u2019s\ntable three times a day, we must see agriculture as a business and that is the\nfocus of the Agriculture Extension Division.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Elabanjo\nalso gave kudos to the many Stakeholders including CARDI, IICA, and FAO that\nhave partnered with agriculture in a number training programmes over the years.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Another\nPanelist at the forum, Farmer- Iton Henry, made the point that persons applying\nfor land to go into agriculture should be given small plots in the initial\nstage to see how they operate,   and with\nclose monitoring and guidance from extension officers and they are found to be\ndoing well, the amount of land can be increased.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The point of\nagro-processing was also brought to the fore as to why Antiguan and Barbudan\nfarmers don\u2019t embark on this venture on a large scale basis.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Mr. Elabanjo\ninsisted that it\u2019s not that simple as many factors must be taken into\nconsideration.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cWhen we are\ntalking about Agro-processing, we have to standardize what we are talking\nabout.\u201d Elabanjo stated.  Like the\ntomatoes we are producing in Antigua are table tomatoes, they are not for\nprocessing.  If you really want to\nprocess, there are so many other varieties we have to use; the same goes for mangoes\nand many other crops for that matter.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The senior\nextension officer added that the other components like the costs of electricity,\nwater and adequate storage facilities also come into play for an\nagro-processing business to consistently meet market demands.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

He however\nagreed that more utilization of our local produce in innovative ways can help\nto reduce our Food Import Bill.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cWhat do we\nimport in Antigua as food? It\u2019s basically processed foods on the shelves and\npeople buy them and things like the fresh okras are at the market or as we\ndrive up market street, we see them, but yet, we buy it in the box so we too\nhave to look at what we are doing.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

He\ncontinued, \u201cthe children are looking at us and see what we do and buy and take\npattern.  We want positive reaction to\nhappen. We can have the food and people can still be hungry and that\u2019s the key\nfactor we have to look at.\u2019 <\/p>\n
