MP Maria Browne has urged women across Antigua and Barbuda to step into the construction industry, emphasizing the significant opportunities available in the booming sector. During her presentation in Parliament for the 2025 budget debate, the MP for St. John\u2019s Rural East called for greater female involvement in a field traditionally dominated by men.<\/p>

\u201cConstruction is one of the fastest-growing industries right now, and there is money to be made,\u201d she stated. \u201cI think it\u2019s time for women to tap into this field and explore opportunities in construction management, heavy-duty equipment operation, and even hands-on building work.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The MP highlighted the role of women as a key to improving quality and efficiency in construction. \u201cWomen have a peculiar attention to detail that can benefit this industry greatly,\u201d she said. She also pointed to the success of a female intern at National Housing this year, who has since secured a permanent position, as an example of what women can achieve in the field.<\/p>

Browne underscored the importance of empowering single mothers and women looking for sustainable income streams to consider training and employment in construction. \u201cIt\u2019s not just a job; it\u2019s a way to create revenue for households while contributing to national development,\u201d she added.<\/p>

As part of the government\u2019s push to upskill the labor force, MP Browne mentioned collaboration with the Ministry of Education to introduce accredited training programs. These initiatives will include courses in heavy-duty equipment operation, masonry, carpentry, and electrical work.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

She explained, \u201cWe are working to ensure that individuals who complete these programs are licensed and certified, enabling them to work both locally and internationally.\u201d<\/p>

The MP acknowledged that construction remains male-dominated but expressed optimism about the increasing interest from women. She called on training institutions, private contractors, and the government to create more inclusive pathways for women to enter the industry.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
