Director of Agriculture, Jedidiah Maxime has underscored the\nimportance of strategic marketing to drive the agricultural sector to the next\nlevel in Antigua and Barbuda.<\/p>

Maxime made the point during a panel discussion earlier this\nweek, as he addressed a number of issues critical to the sustainable growth of\nthe agriculture sector<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cIt is one thing to have produce available in our country,\nbut if it is not marketed to our consumers, a lot of it will still go to waste\nbecause we are competing with other  interests from outside that are doing a very\ngood job at marketing and they are marketing against the things that we are\nproducing.\u201d<\/p>

\"\"<\/a><\/div>\n\n\n\n

Maxime said that in a Draft Marketing Study which was recently\nconducted by FAO\u2019s Consultant, Elbert Johnson, it was revealed that meat and\nmeat products accounted for about 43 percent of the total Food Import Bill.  \u201cThis means that we are importing nearly 50\npercent – the bill is almost 50 percent or half in meat and meat products.\u201d<\/p>

He said that if the country is eager about reducing the food\nimport bill on a sustainable basis, the issue of meat and meat production must\nbe addressed.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The agriculture director said that producing protein-rich\nfeeds can assist in supplementing some of the imported protein being used by farmers.\nHe said that competing with the price of imported pork can be a challenge.<\/p>

According to Mr. Maxime, at one time, Antigua and Barbuda\nwas self-sufficient in goat and mutton to some extent but now, a lot of goat\nmeat that is being consumed in Antigua is imported. He emphasized that lowering\nthe cost of local production is critical.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

During the lengthy panel discussion, Mr. Maxime also highlighted\nthe role that both the Peoples Republic of China and the Cuban Government are\nplaying in helping to meet the country\u2019s food production targets.<\/p>

Maxime announced that a Chinese Technical team is on the\nground in Antigua and Barbuda, assisting with crop production and they will be\nundertaking a system of extensive training to transfer technology to the\nfarmers in terms of production over the next three years.<\/p>

\"\"<\/a><\/div>\n\n\n\n

The agriculture director further added that a Cuban Technical\nBrigade will be arriving in Antigua in a few weeks to focus on livestock\nproduction.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cOur meat imports as I have mentioned, are very high.  If you take pork for instance, we import about\njust over a million pounds annually and we produce much less than that; I don\u2019t\nthink we produce one tenth of what we import in terms of our overall production\nof pork and one of the reasons, It\u2019s because of the price of feed, it\u2019s very,\nvery high.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

According to Maxime, the Cubans will be assisting local\nfarmers to utilize some of the local products to supplement the feed.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cFor instance whereas the imported feed consists mainly of\ncorn in Cuba, they are substituting the corn as an energy source with cassava\nand sweet potato. Those are things that we can grow very competitively in\nAntigua and Barbuda, and if we are able to produce at the level required, we\ncan actually support a vibrant pork industry by allowing the cost of feed to\nsignificantly reduce and if we can reduce the cost of feed for poultry, pigs\nand for small ruminants, it will make us more competitive,\u201d Maxime maintained.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

In the meantime, Maxime said that the Ministry is committed\nto assist in finding more lucrative markets for local farmers.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

According to Maxime, he believes the time has come for fast\nfood business establishments to utilize locally produced chicken and local\ncrops on their menu.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

He said  KFC for\ninstance,  can begin to consider using Antiguan\nproduced chicken,  sweet potato and\ncassava fries to supplement some of the Irish potatoes that are coming in.<\/p>\n
