Statement by the first Vice Chair of the Antigua and Barbuda Labour Party – International Day for the elimination of violence against women & 16 days of activism
\u201cTowards Beijing+30:unite to end violence against women and girls\u201d<\/strong><\/p>

\"\"<\/a><\/div>\n\n\n\n

As the First Vice Chair of the ABLP and the first woman elected at a general election representing our party, I am filled with pride and determination.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Today, we recognize the International Day for the Elimination of Violence Against Women, and the 16 days of activism under the banner of \u201cTowards Beijing +30: UNiTE to End Violence Against Women and Girls,\u201d a cause that resonates deeply within our hearts and communities.
Thirty years ago, the world came together in Beijing to affirm the rights of women and girls, laying a foundation for gender equality and empowerment. Yet, despite significant progress, we find ourselves at a critical juncture where violence against women and girls persists as a global epidemic. This is not just a women\u2019s issue; it is a human rights issue that requires our collective action.<\/p>

\"\"<\/a><\/div>
\"\"<\/a><\/div>\n\n\n\n

As women leaders, within our homes; our churches; our workplace; and our communities, we have the moral obligation to champion the rights of those who are often silenced. Our voices must echo not only in support of our Government but also to continuously, advocate for policies that will protect and empower every woman and girl. We must support and aide our Government in not only addressing the symptoms of violence but also confronting the root causes that perpetuate it: harmful stereotypes, economic inequality, and systemic discrimination.<\/p>

\"\"<\/a><\/div>\n\n\n\n

Our journey towards a violent-free society begins with education and awareness. We must equip our communities with the tools to challenge and dismantle the cultural norms that allow violence to flourish. Together, we can create environments where women and girls feel safe, valued, and empowered to pursue their dreams without fear.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Moreover, we must engage men and boys in this fight. True change requires the active participation of all genders. We must foster dialogue that encourages men to become allies in the pursuit of equality, helping to reshape the narratives around masculinity and power.<\/p>

\"\"<\/a><\/div>\n\n\n\n

As the First Vice Chair of the ABLP, I commit to working tirelessly to amplify our efforts in this mission. Together, we will advocate for comprehensive policies that address the needs of survivors and hold perpetrators accountable. We will support grassroots organizations that work directly with affected communities, ensuring that no voice goes unheard.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

In the spirit of collaboration, let us unite with our Government, civil society, and international organizations. Let us share best practices and learn from one another’s experiences. We can create a global movement that not only raises awareness but also drives real change in our societies. As the oldest political party with so many women taking various leadership roles within, we must appreciate that we have a role to play in supporting our Government initiatives and holding them accountable.<\/p>

As we look towards Beijing +30, let us as as a political organization renew our commitment to ending violence against women and girls. Let us stand together, not just as leaders, but as a powerful force for change. Together, we can build a future where every woman and girl can live free from violence and achieve their fullest potential.<\/p>
