The government of Antigua and Barbuda has adjusted its timeline for settling $35 million in back pay owed to public sector employees, according to Chief of Staff Lionel Max Hurst. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Initially expected in December, the first payment is now set to begin in January, with efforts underway to gather the necessary funds.<\/p>

Speaking during a Post-Cabinet briefing, Hurst explained that the government plans to disburse December salaries early, before Christmas, to alleviate financial pressures for workers during the holiday season. <\/p>

However, the back pay payments\u2014equivalent to about one month\u2019s salary for government employees\u2014will likely begin in January, once the funds are secured.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cSometime in January, we may begin paying down on the $35 million in back pay,\u201d Hurst confirmed. He further outlined the government\u2019s intention to prioritize resources, ensuring timely payment of regular salaries alongside these additional obligations.<\/p>

Hurst acknowledged that the delay in the back pay schedule is due to the significant financial requirements involved.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cWe calculated it to be about $35 million, which is roughly the same amount we spend each month on government salaries,\u201d he explained, highlighting the challenge of setting aside such a substantial sum while maintaining routine payroll operations.<\/p>
