Antigua Confident in Alfa Nero Sale Despite Legal Challenges<\/strong><\/p>

The government of Antigua and Barbuda remains resolute in its defense of the sale of the luxury yacht Alfa Nero<\/em>, amid ongoing legal disputes over ownership claims.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

During a Post-Cabinet briefing, Chief of Staff Lionel Max Hurst addressed concerns about the impact of legal challenges on the high-profile sale, asserting that the government acted lawfully and is prepared to defend its actions in court.<\/p>

\u201cWe anticipated that there would be claims made,\u201d Hurst stated.<\/p>

\"\"<\/a><\/div>\n\n\n\n

\u201cThere\u2019s no doubt that there are a lot of litigious folks connected to this particular challenge.\u201d <\/p>\n\n\n\n

He noted that these legal threats initially deterred the first bidder, who withdrew to avoid potential lawsuits. To address such concerns, the government offered indemnity to the final buyer, described by Hurst as a \u201cwealthy young man,\u201d who purchased the yacht from the Antiguan government.<\/p>

The Alfa Nero<\/em>, left unclaimed in Falmouth Harbour since 2022, was seized by the government in 2023 and later sold for $40 million. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Hurst esaid that all actions leading up to the sale complied with legal requirements, including providing adequate opportunities for the owner to claim the vessel.<\/p>

\u201cEverything was done to ensure that the owner would step forward within the time limit provided,\u201d he explained. \u201cNot having stepped forward, they lost that opportunity forever.\u201d<\/p>

\"\"<\/a><\/div>\n\n\n\n

Despite these challenges, Hurst expressed confidence in the government\u2019s position. \u201cThey failed before, and they will fail again, we believe,\u201d he said. \u201cThe courts, going all the way up to the Privy Council, are satisfied.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Hurst also commented on the motivations behind the legal actions, characterizing the claimants as wealthy individuals willing to spend significant sums on litigation. \u201cThey don\u2019t mind\u2014they\u2019re wealthy people, and they\u2019re spending their money with lawyers who are happy to take it,\u201d he remarked.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

While Hurst refrained from commenting further on the case due to its ongoing nature, he reiterated the government\u2019s belief in the legality of the sale and its preparedness to defend its actions at every judicial level.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
