New Cemetery to Open Before Year’s End, Says Government Chief of Staff<\/strong><\/p>

Chief of Staff Lionel Max Hurst has confirmed that the government\u2019s new cemetery will be fully operational before the end of 2024.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

During the Post-Cabinet briefing, Hurst highlighted significant progress, including the installation of gates and ongoing roadworks within the cemetery grounds. <\/p>

A curator will also be appointed to ensure the facility is orderly and well-maintained once it begins receiving burials.<\/p>

Hurst noted that the cemetery represents an essential addition to national infrastructure, aiming to address longstanding concerns about burial space.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cThe expectation is that a curator of sorts will be appointed so that there\u2019s great order in that cemetery when it begins to receive cadavers,\u201d he said, underscoring the government’s commitment to completing the project by year-end.<\/p>

In addition to the cemetery, the government is prioritizing repairs to key facilities, particularly medical clinics. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Hurst explained that four clinics are currently being repaired, with each project costing over $200,000. <\/p>

The aim is to reduce congestion at the Sir Lester Bird Medical Centre by ensuring clinics are fully operational and staffed by doctors. These upgrades, along with restocking and re-equipping efforts, are expected to be completed by Christmas.<\/p>

The government\u2019s infrastructure improvements extend to other buildings as well.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Renovations are underway at the NTTC Center on Nugent Avenue, with parts of the facility set to house the Ministry of Agriculture and the Post Office. This temporary relocation will allow for extensive repairs to the historic High and Long Streets post office, a project estimated to cost over $1 million.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Hurst noted the importance of these projects in enhancing public services and preparing for potential health emergencies, noting that maintaining readiness is a key lesson from history.<\/p>\n
