\u201cThe future\nof Food and Nutrition Security in Antigua and Barbuda,\u201d was the focus of a\nPanel Discussion held yesterday (Tues) as part of extended activities for World\nFood Day, which was officially observed on October 16th<\/sup>.<\/p>

\"\"<\/a><\/div>\n\n\n\n

It was the\nfirst of two forums which will be held during this month. The other is slated\nfor 19th<\/sup> November.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Yesterday\u2019s\nPanel comprised Director of Agriculture Mr. Jedidiah Maxime, FAO\u2019s Focal Point\nfor Antigua and Barbuda and Senior Extension Officer-Technical, Owolabi Elabanjo\nand CARDI\u2019s Country Representative, Mr. Paul Lucas.<\/p>

\"\"<\/a><\/div>\n\n\n\n

Mr. Maxime\nshared a synopsis on where Antigua and Barbuda stands with regards to food\nsecurity.<\/p>

\"\"<\/a><\/div>\n\n\n\n

He said that\nit is no secret that the country imports more than it produces and depends\nsignificantly on imported food to sustain itself. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

He however\nnoted that this does not augur very well for a country that can be food secured.<\/p>

\"\"<\/a><\/div>\n\n\n\n

 \u201cWe have resources that if we commit them in a\nvery planned and strategic way, we can significantly reduce our dependency on\nimported food and to the extent that we can depend on what we produce to\nsustain ourselves, would be a measure of our food security.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

He\ncontinued, \u201cWe might not be able to produce one hundred percent of the food we\nneed, but if we can produce enough that we can sustain ourselves and there are\nany external shocks to the food supply, then we will be able to survive, that\u2019s\nwhat food security is all about.\u201d<\/p>

\"\"<\/a><\/div>\n\n\n\n

Maxime noted\nthat as a vulnerable small island state, there are a number of factors that can\naffect food supply, such as war, outbreak of disease in one of the major supply\nchains and issues with transportation due to natural disasters.<\/p>

\"\"<\/a><\/div>\n\n\n\n

He said that\nsome people take the issue of food security for granted but the government has\ntaken this very seriously to the extent that a Comprehensive Marketing Study\nhas been commissioned and based on the Preliminary Report presented by FAO\u2019s\nConsultant Elbert Johnson, there is much work to be done to enhance the state\nof the country\u2019s food security.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Maxime said according\nto the report, the latest stats in terms of food imports has the food import\nbill standing close to 300 hundred million EC dollars annually.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

He said that\nthis is a lot of money leaving the country every year to bring food into the\ncountry.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Maxime wants\nto see more food-based business establishments utilizing local produce to drive\ntheir businesses, while offering options at the same.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

He said that\nfast food agencies should consider using local poultry and other crops such as sweet\npotatoes to make chips (fries) instead of the using the irish potatoes. Food\nsecurity, according to the agriculture director, is not just having food\navailable but also having it accessible to the most vulnerable in society.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

In the\nmeantime, Maxime said that the government will be intensifying efforts to clean\nponds and dams and construct new ones as part of continued efforts to improve\nrain water harvesting for agricultural use. Two new excavators should be arriving\nfrom China shortly to help in this initiative.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The Theme for World Food\nDay 2018 is: \u201cOur Actions are our Future\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

# A Zero Hunger World by\n2030 is possible.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Elabanjo\nsaid that this year\u2019s Theme is of key importance to Antigua and Barbuda as the\ncountry has been in the front line of the Zero Hunger Challenge since 2012.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

He wants to\nsee Antigua and Barbuda zero hunger free before the year2030 and called on all\nstakeholders such as IICA, CARDI, Ministry of \nEducation, Agriculture, Ministry of Health, Social Transformation,\nFinance, Statistics , the Hoteliers, Farmers and Homeowners to work together\ntowards achieving this goal.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

He said that\nthe backyard garden programme is one of the focal areas which can assist in\nachieving this.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u2018Once every\nhand can be in the soil, everybody can plant and produce something, no matter\nhow small it is, we will get to the promise land.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Mr. Lucas,\nwho is also the Caribbean Agriculture Research and Development Institute\n(CARDI) representative for Montserrat, said that the regional organization\nrecognizes the importance of food security and is working closely with the\nministry, IICA, FAO and other Stakeholders is very important.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cBecause we recognize\nthe need for food security within the region. From my standpoint, I would like\nto emphasize the need for greater collaboration; I think that goes a long way.\nAs it stands, we found that working together allows us to accomplish much more.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Lucas said\nthat recently, for the backyard garden programme, the organisation has worked\nclosely with the Extension Division in getting a number of plants ready for the\nfarmers.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Apart from\nthat initiative, Lucas said that they are also looking to work together on a\nnumber of workshops and other activities across the island.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The CARDI\nCountry Representative said that educating the farmers and sharing new\ntechnology and practices, are pivotal to transforming the agriculture sector.<\/p>\n
