Prime Minister Defends Government\u2019s Contributions to Social Security and Statutory Corporations<\/strong><\/p>

Prime Minister Gaston Browne addressed concerns in Parliament today about the government\u2019s payments to Social Security, Medical Benefits, and the Board of Education. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Opposition MP Richard Lewis questioned the Prime Minister on the status of these statutory deductions and the delays in meeting obligations.<\/p>

Responding to the queries, Browne recalled that his administration has been the only one in Antigua and Barbuda\u2019s history to consistently pay all Social Security premiums without borrowing from its reserves. He stated that from 2014 to 2023, his government paid $200 million into Social Security over nine years, far surpassing the $60 million paid by a previous administration over a ten-year period.<\/p>

Browne acknowledged that one year\u2019s worth of payments to Social Security remains outstanding due to lingering economic pressures from the COVID-19 pandemic. Despite this, he assured Parliament that the government plans to clear these arrears by 2025, projecting sufficient revenue surpluses to meet these obligations.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

He also criticized past administrations for borrowing from Social Security reserves without repayment, calling their actions a significant contributor to the fund’s financial challenges. Browne noted that during the pandemic, his government made advance payments to Social Security to ensure beneficiaries continued receiving their payments.<\/p>

When pressed further, the Prime Minister confirmed that delays also impacted Medical Benefits and the Board of Education but reiterated his administration\u2019s commitment to resolving these arrears.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
