MP Jamale Pringle, political leader of the United Progressive Party (UPP) is joining his predecessor, Harold Lovell, in condemning the attack of Prime Minister Gaston Browne on Aldin Crump, a senior public servant in the Ministry of Works.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

In an analytical article published in today\u2019s Daily Observer, Lovell chides Browne for seeking to usurp the authority of the Public <\/a>Service Commission and for appearing to condone the illegal practice of public servants accepting \u201cgifts\u201d for services.<\/p>

Pringle says he also finds Browne\u2019s allegations of bribery and kickbacks distasteful, and notes that such \u201cpersonal\u201d assaults bring the office of the prime minister into disrepute.<\/p>

The Opposition Leader is also asking why Browne \u2013 and not his wife, Public Works Minister Maria Browne \u2013 is speaking to the issue of road repairs.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cFor years now, the public has been complaining about the condition of both the main roads and the side roads, and their complaints have fallen on deaf ears,\u201d Pringle says.<\/p>

\u201cNow, instead of holding her accountable for her portfolio, the prime minister is laying all the blame at the feet of the director of Public Works and even threatening to send him home,\u201d Pringle adds.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cBut the buck stops with her. She is the one who must answer to the public,\u201d he says.<\/p>

The All Saints East & St. Luke MP notes that he and his Opposition colleagues have complained, time and again, about the poor infrastructure in their constituencies \u2013 seen as a punishment to those who voted against the Antigua Labour Party in the last elections.<\/p>

\u201cIn order to alleviate some of our constituents\u2019 suffering,\u201d he says, \u201cwe have had to perform functions that are the responsibility of the Ministry of Works \u2013 repairing kerbs, clearing waterways and overgrown roadways, putting down stones and marl\u2026.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cWhere was the minister? What has she been doing all this time?\u201d he asks.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

He says it appears that Browne wants accountability to apply only to public servants, but not to those elected to run the country.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

And even when the prime minister calls out civil servants and the managers of government corporations, such as the Antigua Public Utilities Authority (APUA), Pringle says, it is always to further a political objective; never in the people’s interest.<\/p>\n
