It is imperative to develop policies that foster the responsible and ethical use of AI technologies across all sectors.<\/p>

The Readiness Assessment Methodology (RAM) Validation Workshop, hosted on the 27th<\/sup> of September 24 by the Ministry of Information, Communication Technologies (ICTs), Utilities and Energy of Antigua and Barbuda and UNESCO, in partnership with the University of the West Indies, Five Islands Campus, marked a critical milestone in the advancement of responsible AI governance in the Caribbean. Key stakeholders from Antigua and Barbuda, including Hon. Melford Nicholas, Minister of the Ministry of Information, Communication Technologies (ICTs), Utilities and Energy of Antigua and Barbuda were on hand to support the workshop\u2019s goal to pinpoint areas for improvement and establish the next steps for finalizing the RAM implementation in Antigua and Barbuda.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

This workshop offers an opportunity for reflection on the future of the country\u2019s digital transformation journey recognizing the increased use of AI<\/p>

In her opening remarks, Gabriela Ramos, Assistant Director-General for Social and Human Sciences of UNESCO, expressed deep appreciation for the Government of Antigua and Barbuda\u2019s steadfast commitment to strengthening national capacities in AI governance, with tailored support for effective AI frameworks, setting a standard for the Caribbean region.  <\/p>\n\n\n\n

These efforts set a precedent for other Caribbean nations by ensuring that human and institutional capacities, regulations and policies, are in place to manage AI challenges and prioritize the interests of citizens.The RAM process goes beyond providing insights and policy recommendations. It offers continued support for implementation through a global network of experts, including AI Ethics Experts Without Borders and Women 4 Ethics of AI, along with innovative tools such as the Ethical Impact Assessment, ensuring a comprehensive approach to ethical AI governance.<\/p>

During the workshop, participants from various sectors\u2014including government ministries, academia, civil society, and the private sector\u2014collaborated to refine and validate the RAM. Participants provided suggestions to reinforce the RAM through an additional round of national consultations, highlighted the importance of enhancing awareness-raising through public education campaigns, and developed policy recommendations for inclusion in the final report. Participants also acknowledged access and availability to quantitative data were a key challenge. <\/p>

As AI continues to shape the future of societies worldwide, the Caribbean stands at a pivotal moment to ensure that its development is equitable and ethical. The RAM Validation Workshop is one of the many steps being taken to prepare for a future where AI serves as a tool for public good, supporting sustainable growth and human dignity in the region. The workshop reflected Antigua and Barbuda\u2019s proactive role in promoting the responsible design and development of AI technologies. 

UNESCO\u2019s Readiness Assessment Methodology, developed to support countries in operationalizing the 2021 UNESCO Recommendation on the Ethics of Artificial Intelligence, offers a robust framework for assessing national AI readiness. It serves not only as an assessment tool but also as a guide for strategic planning, ensuring that AI development aligns with ethical principles, human rights, and public good. Antigua and Barbuda is one of the more than 50 countries, globally, undertaking the Readiness Assessment Methodology. Through a comprehensive mapping of stakeholders, consultations, interviews and research analysis, the implementation of the RAM has progressed steadily.<\/p>
