Antigua and Barbuda to celebrate United Nations Day<\/p>

The Government of Antigua and Barbuda will join the United Nations Barbados and Eastern Caribbean this year in celebrating United Nations (UN) Day, being observed globally on October 24, under the theme \u2018Decent Work and Economic Growth\u2019 (SDG8) and \u2018Partnerships for the
goals\u2019 (SDG 17).<\/p>\n\n\n\n


The Ministry of Foreign Affairs will lead celebratory activities to commemorate the UN\u2019s 79th- anniversary milestone and Antigua and Barbuda\u2019s 43rd anniversary of UN membership, which commenced on 25 November 1981. <\/p>

\"\"<\/div>\n\n\n\n

The activities will be held in collaboration with the UN Resident Coordinator Office and UN agencies resident in Antigua and Barbuda.<\/p>

\"\"<\/a><\/div>\n\n\n\n


A Flag Raising ceremony will be held on UN Day, Thursday, October 24th, at 8:45 a.m., on the grounds of the Office of the Prime Minister, as a symbol of hope and mutual commitment to multilateralism.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Minister of Foreign Affairs, Trade and Barbuda Affairs, the Hon. E.P. Chet Greene, and UN Resident Coordinator, Simon Springett, will deliver UN Day video messages during the formal ceremony, which will have participation from a wide range of stakeholders.<\/p>

During UN week, several public events will also be staged as part of ongoing efforts to build awareness and accelerate the implementation of the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) in-
country. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

These will include a Community Cleanup Exercise on Friday, October 25th, beginning at 6:30 a.m. <\/p>

Interested persons are asked to assemble at the UN Common Premises at the Omega Building on Independence Drive, bio-degradable garbage bags, and gloves will be available and distributed on the morning of the cleanup. <\/p>

\"\"<\/a><\/div>\n\n\n\n

An Advocacy Walk to raise awareness of the SDGs is also planned for Saturday, October 26th , beginning at 6:00 a.m.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The walk will start at the UN Common Premises at the Omega Building on Independence Drive and end at Anas by the Beach.
Public members are urged to come out and join in these celebratory activities.<\/p>\n\n\n\n


Schoolchildren and entrepreneurs will also be featured on Antigua and Barbuda\u2019s agenda for UN
Day. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Several visits are being planned to schools, as well as to MSMEs to highlight how the UN is supporting efforts to leave no one behind in Antigua. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

An SDG-themed debate is also being planned, among other activities to observe this UN milestone.<\/p>\n\n\n\n


UN Day has been celebrated since 1948 and marks the anniversary of the entry into force of the
UN Charter in 1945. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

This year\u2019s theme is an important one for Antigua and Barbuda, as it reminds us that full productive employment and decent work for all are indicative of inclusive and sustained economic growth. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

On this 79th year of service to people and the planet, we must endeavor to work harmoniously, and in solidarity to achieve all of the SDGs<\/p>\n
