France seeks closer security arrangements with A&B, OECS<\/strong><\/p>

Two officials from the French embassy in St. Lucia recently visited Antigua and Barbuda, engaging in talks with key government officials on security and other matters of mutual interest. The officials, Security Attache Jean-Raoul Bargmann and Liaison Judge Emmanuelle Doff\u00e9, held discussions with Foreign Affairs Minister, E.P. Chet Greene, and Permanent Secretary, Ambassador Clarence Pilgrim, where potential areas of cooperation were explored.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Reports suggest that the French officials are seeking an agreement with Antigua and Barbuda to support technological cooperation in judicial systems and other key areas in the OECS territories. This includes improved relations between local law enforcement agencies and their French counterparts. Additionally, the French government hopes to facilitate better communication on important criminal matters between Antigua and Barbuda and France, including sharing criminal record information with French authorities.<\/p>

Minister Greene extended Antigua and Barbuda’s desire to strengthen and deepen ties with France. He emphasized the country\u2019s commitment to continuing the bilateral cooperation that exists between the two nations. While recognizing the challenge posed by the language barrier, he noted that closer ties with Guadeloupe, which is part of France, would be beneficial, citing the proximity of the French territory as visible from Antigua\u2019s shores.<\/p>

During the visit, the officials also met with Attorney General Steadroy Benjamin, the Interpol focal point, and other key figures, including the Director of Public Prosecutions and the Commissioner of Police.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Greene also made a case for additional support in monitoring the country\u2019s borders. He stressed the vulnerability of Antigua and Barbuda\u2019s borders, which require increased protection to prevent unauthorized entries. The minister requested assistance in securing a vessel for border monitoring and emphasized the need for enhanced cooperation in combating human trafficking.<\/p>
