Team Antigua and Barbuda\u00a0(DadliBots)\u00a0has returned\u00a0home\u00a0from the recently concluded 2024\u00a0FIRST<\/em>\u00a0Global Challenge\u00a0(FGC)\u00a0held\u00a0in Athens, Greece; bringing back a wealth of insights and\u00a0practical\u00a0experiences despite\u00a0winning only\u00a0three (3) of their twelve (12) qualification alliance matches; falling from their highest\u00a0team\u00a0ranking of #105 down to #175 out of 180+ countries\u00a0that participated.

The annual\u00a0olympics-style, international robotics competition invites nations\u00a0from around the world\u00a0to send a team\u00a0of high school students\u00a0to build and program a robot\u00a0that mustcollaboratively\u00a0compete\u00a0in a\u00a0game themed\u00a0around\u00a0the\u00a0greatest challenges facing our planet\u00a0today; with\u00a0this year\u00a0being focusedon sustainable food production\u00a0and titled:\u00a0\u201cFeeding the Future\u201d<\/em><\/strong>

Despite their performance, the\u00a0five\u00a0students\u00a0(Lemario \u2013 Leader, Brielle \u2013 Driver, Reanna \u2013 Coder, Tiksna Inventory and Xion \u2013 Engineer)\u00a0who represented the nation\u00a0said they were happy for the opportunity to showcase their\u00a0creative design and programming\u00a0skills,\u00a0in spite of\u00a0the\u00a0stiff\u00a0competition\u00a0they faced\u00a0with their robot named\u00a0\u201cZEUS\u201d<\/em>\u00a0–\u00a0learning\u00a0firsthand the importance of\u00a0planning,\u00a0adaptability\u00a0and\u00a0teamwork.\u00a0

\u201cMeeting\u00a0with persons\u00a0within your alliance before the match, so you can know what you are going to do and when you are going to do it\u00a0is\u00a0very\u00a0important\u201d<\/em>\u00a0said\u00a0Lemario,\u00a0\u201cGetting along with your team mates as well as persons from\u00a0the\u00a0other teams\u00a0is\u00a0also\u00a0important for getting through the competition\u201d

Mentors\u00a0Mr. Elijah James and Ms. Andie Stephen\u00a0of the\u00a0DadliBots\u00a0Esports\u00a0program\u00a0which has been providing free STEM education to local youth since 2018\u00a0and is currently\u00a0based at the American Corner Antigua\u00a0located on the 2nd<\/sup>\u00a0floor of the\u00a0National Public Library;\u00a0both\u00a0acknowledged that\u00a0there were\u00a0a number of challenges\u00a0facing the 2024\u00a0team before and\u00a0throughout the\u00a0event\u00a0including:\u00a0team dynamics,\u00a0wiring and connectivity issues whichintermittently\u00a0disabled\u00a0the robot,\u00a0the robot falling over\u00a0even\u00a0losing its wheel\u00a0on the field\u00a0and not having other\u00a0countries show up\u00a0to compete\u00a0in\u00a0scheduled\u00a0alliance matches.\u00a0This is\u00a0in\u00a0contrast to\u00a0the previous\u00a0team which had\u00a0peaked at #24\u00a0while competingin\u00a0FGC\u00a0Singapore\u00a02023.

\u201cThe students\u00a0were very proud to\u00a0promote\u00a0their country as they\u00a0participated in a number of activities, networked and made bunch of new friends\u201d<\/em>\u00a0said mentor Elijah,\u00a0\u201cThey pledged their commitment to\u00a0not only\u00a0promoting Robotics\u00a0is\u00a0a Sport\u00a0when they returned\u00a0home\u00a0but also\u00a0joined\u00a0the\u00a0thousands of\u00a0other\u00a0young people who\u00a0signed\u00a0The FIRST Global Declaration of Interdependence and Bill of Responsibilities\u00a0which\u00a0represents\u00a0the foundational credo of FIRST Global:\u00a0as a\u00a0community dedicated to the cooperative pursuit of a more peaceful world, achieved by innovating together to ensure the life, liberty, success, advancement, and happiness of all who share our planet.\u201d<\/em>

The Caribbean countries that participated\u00a0also\u00a0came together\u00a0at the event\u00a0to\u00a0celebrate\u00a0each other\u00a0in solidarity\u00a0and\u00a0to\u00a0discuss\u00a0plans that are\u00a0already\u00a0in motion for the\u00a0hosting\u00a0of an inaugural\u00a0regional robotics competition\u00a0in the British Virgin Islands (BVI). This has been\u00a0a result of the\u00a0recent\u00a0formation the OECS Robotics Association\u00a0by\u00a0founder\u00a0Dr. Ricardo R. Neil\u00a0with plans to have the chairmanship being rotated\u00a0amongst each member country.
