Antigua and Barbuda joined other Caribbean nations in overwhelmingly supporting a United Nations resolution condemning Israel\u2019s continued illegal occupation of Palestinian territories. <\/p>

The resolution, co-sponsored by Guyana, the State of Palestine, and over 20 other nations, demands that Israel end its \u201cunlawful presence\u201d within 12 months. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

It also calls for an immediate halt to all new illegal settlement activities, evacuation of settlers from the Occupied Palestinian Territory, and the return of land seized since the occupation began in 1967, allowing displaced Palestinians to return to their homes.<\/p>

Of the 16 Caribbean countries in the UN\u2019s General Assembly, only Haiti and the Dominican Republic abstained from the vote. In total, 124 nations voted in favor of the resolution, while the US and Israel were among 14 countries that rejected it. Forty-three nations, many with strong ties to the US and Israel, abstained.<\/p>

During the debate, St. Vincent and the Grenadines\u2019 Ambassador to the UN, Inga King, expressed her country’s deep concern over the ongoing violence between Israel and Hamas in the Gaza Strip, stating that it not only challenges international law but also the moral conscience of the global community. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

She emphasized that the conflict is rooted in Israel\u2019s illegal occupation and colonial practices, referencing a recent International Court of Justice opinion that deemed Israel\u2019s continued presence in the Occupied Palestinian Territory unlawful. King called for the application of international law to stop the violence and enable peaceful coexistence between Israel and Palestine.<\/p>
