LOOP: The government of Antigua and Barbuda has announced that the new international airport in Barbuda, set to open on October 3, 2024, will be named the Burton-Nibbs International Airport.<\/p>

This decision comes after extensive consultations with Barbudan residents and careful deliberation by the Cabinet.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The naming honours two distinguished Barbudan politicians and entrepreneurs: Sir Eric Burton and the Arthur Nibbs.<\/p>

Both men served as Members of Parliament(MPs) representing Barbuda and played crucial roles in the nation’s development, particularly during the formative years of Antigua and Barbuda as an independent state.<\/p>

Cabinet stated, “During robust discussions, the Cabinet critically examined the contributions of several named persons, not only to the development of the twin-island state but more specifically to the socio-economic, cultural, and political landscape of the island of Barbuda.”<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The Cabinet considered numerous suggestions from the public, acknowledging the contributions of several notable Barbudans, including: the late Claude Earl Francis, Sir McChesney George, Hilborne Frank and the current MP Trevor Walker.<\/p>

\"\"<\/a><\/div>\n\n\n\n

However, Sir Eric Burton and Arthur Nibbs were ultimately chosen for their unique contributions.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

“It was determined that these two individuals distinguished themselves at the advent of the twin-island state during the framing of the constitution of Antigua and Barbuda at Lancaster House in 1980,” the Cabinet explained.<\/p>

Both Burton and Nibbs were described as “stalwarts of the political scene, pioneering entrepreneurs, and leaders who advanced commerce and economic development for the island.”<\/p>

The decision to name the airport after these two figures reflects the government’s desire to honour Barbuda’s political history and economic development.<\/p>\n
