FAO\u2019s\nAgricultural Consultant, Mr. Elbert Johnson said that Antigua and Barbuda has\nthe potential to develop a more economically-viable agriculture sector, if\ncertain changes are made going forward.<\/p>

\"\"<\/a><\/div>\n\n\n\n

Johnson made\nthe comments as he recently concluded a two-week visit with the Ministry of\nAgriculture, as part of an assignment to produce a Marketing Plan and Strategy for\nthe ministry.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u00a0This is part of government\u2019s efforts to transform\nthe role of agriculture in the economic development of Antigua and Barbuda.<\/p>

\"\"<\/div>\n\n\n\n

Johnson said\nthat although Antigua and Barbuda imports produce and livestock products on a\nregular basis, there are some crops that can be further developed to help reduce\nthe food import bill.<\/p>

\"\"<\/a><\/div>\n\n\n\n

\u201cThere is\npotential \u00a0for onions and carrots for\nsure,\u201d, Johnson stated, \u00a0the quality is\nexcellent, tomatoes as well and there is a lot of potential for the lettuce\nthat I see produced in Antigua, they are very good quality using Aquaponics or\nhydroponics.\u00a0 There is a lot of potential\nin increasing the production of these items.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

During the\ntwo week visit, Johnson met with key stakeholders, including most of the buyers,\nto support market driven nature of the initiative. <\/p>

He visited\nthe Central Marketing Corporation (CMC), Horizons, most of the supermarkets,\nmajor farmers groups \/ associations, individual farmers, major institutions,\nvarious departments within the Ministry of Agriculture including Plant\nProtection, Agriculture\u00a0 Extension, Analytical\nServices and the Statistics, Research and Information Division within the\nministry\u2019s headquarters.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Johnson said\nthat based on information received, Antigua and Barbuda is almost 100 percent\nself sufficient in egg production, with some importation, but he believes that the\nlevel of local production could be examined to address the increased demands.<\/p>

Mr. Johnson\nstressed that increasing these local commodities is important to cater for the\nincreased number of hotel rooms that are expected to come on stream shortly.<\/p>

\"\"<\/a><\/div>\n\n\n\n

In the area\nof livestock, Johnson stated that the focus is being placed on pork and poultry\ninitially, both of which are consumed by Antiguans and Barbudans in large\namounts, based on current Data.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

With respect\nto Broilers, the marketing specialist indicated that Antigua and Barbuda\nimports a lot of chicken but there is the potential to increase production\neconomically and profitably. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

In terms of\nPork, according to Mr. Johnson, a small quantity of pork is being produced but\nadded that while there is potential to produce more; keen attention must be\npaid to the quality in order to match the imported product. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cI think\nthat addresses the feed regime that we use, so I think we need to look at that,\nbut there is potential.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Johnson said\nthat the twin island state also has potential to produce goat meat.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u00a0He noted that while a lot of goats are roaming\naround the country, there needs to be a structured marketing channel set up for\ngoats, as the product holds potential to export within the region.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cThere is high\ndemand for local goat meat; across the region, we import a lot of goat meat\nfrom abroad. Caribbean people prefer the local goat meat or what we call \u201c free\nrange \u201c where we allow the animals to roam and graze using natural forage, so\nthere is a big demand I think for goat meat.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Johnson\u2019s\nsurvey also took him to the sister island of Barbuda where he said great\npotential lies in peanut production, complemented by the thriving fishing and\nlivestock sectors there.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The Draft\nMarketing Strategy according to Johnson will be ready for presentation to local\nofficials within the next few weeks when he journeys back here.<\/p>\n
