With the voter ID card replacement process underway, the Antigua and Barbuda Electoral Commission (ABEC) is encountering both successes and obstacles. As of August 30, 4,209 individuals have completed the process, a number that falls short of the 6,000 participants ABEC had hoped for at this stage, according to Supervisor of Elections Ian Hughes.<\/p>

The effort is part of a larger goal to replace 40,000 expired voter ID cards and maintain the integrity of the voter list, which currently includes over 60,000 eligible voters. Launched on August 12, the replacement drive has faced challenges such as connectivity issues in some areas and voters delaying registration until major electoral events draw near.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Despite these challenges, Hughes remains optimistic, anticipating a surge in participation if a by-election is announced later this year. ABEC is urging eligible voters to take advantage of the current extended hours, from 8:30 am to 6 pm, to avoid last-minute rushes. Hughes warned against waiting until the last minute, highlighting the strain it places on the system and encouraging proactive participation to ensure a smooth process leading up to upcoming electoral deadlines.<\/p>
