The Antigua and Barbuda Union of Teachers (ABUT) has announced that its members will continue their industrial action for a third consecutive day today, Friday. According to union president Casroy Charles Jnr., the action will involve a sit-in, with teachers reporting to work but refraining from teaching. He clarified that this should not be classified as a strike.<\/p>

The union is pressing for the payment of outstanding amounts owed to teachers following a re-classification exercise, which saw around 300 educators moved to different salary brackets.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Sharon Kelsick, ABUT\u2019s General Secretary, noted that the industrial action has severely affected school operations, leaving principals and assistant principals to manage the schools in most instances. Kelsick expressed disappointment over the situation, stressing that students are missing out on their education due to the ongoing action.<\/p>

Meanwhile, Director of Education Clare Browne stated that the Ministry of Education is working diligently to resolve the issue and urged teachers to engage with their students. Browne mentioned that of the 300 teachers involved, 297 have been paid, with only three payments still pending. He highlighted one case where the treasury claims payment was made, but the teacher in question has not received it.<\/p>
