Police Commissioner Atlee Rodney acknowledged the seriousness of the situation but reassured the public that progress is being made. He noted that many of those involved in these crimes have been arrested and brought to court, with more arrests expected soon.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The police, working with various agencies, are focused on restoring safety. The government has invested in additional resources for the police and Defense Forces, resulting in increased patrols and intelligence operations, both visible and covert.<\/p>

The Antigua and Barbuda Defense Force (ABDF) has played a key role in supporting the police. Brigadier Telbert Benjamin, Chief of Defense Staff, emphasized the importance of this ongoing partnership, which ensures a continuous law enforcement presence across the nation.<\/p>

A troubling trend is the high rate of repeat offenders. Superintendent Lisbourne Michael reported that, of the 850 people arrested and charged in 2023, 474 were repeat offenders, mostly young individuals aged 15 to 25.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

In response, the government is considering legal reforms to make it harder for individuals accused of certain violent crimes to secure bail. These proposed changes will be discussed in the House of Representatives later this week.<\/p>
