Minister of Agriculture, Fisheries and Barbuda Affairs, Hon. Dean Jonas, delivered the FAO’s Director General’s Message on the occasion of World Food Day, October 16th, 2018 (today).<\/p>

\"\"<\/a><\/div>\n\n\n\n

In this message, it was\nnoted that nearly 820 million people were undernourished in 2017, according to\nthe latest State of Food Security in the World Report. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

According to the\nmessage, conflict, extreme weather events linked to climate change and economic\nslowdown, are reversing progress made in the fight against hunger.<\/p>

\"\"<\/a><\/div>\n\n\n\n

According to the\nstatement, the time is right to redouble efforts to achieve the global goal of\nzero hunger.<\/p>

\"\"<\/a><\/div>\n\n\n\n

World Food Day calls on\nthe International community to work more closely together and make use of the\nevidence and tools available.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Three years ago, all UN\nMember Countries pledged to end poverty and hunger when they committed to the\nSustainable Development Goals.<\/p>

\"\"<\/a><\/div>\n\n\n\n

Minister Jonas meanwhile\nused the opportunity to urge citizens to pay more attention to eating healthy\nchoices of food as this can help to avoid the incidence of Non-Communicable\nDiseases (NCDs) that is so prevalent today.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u00a0He said although hunger is not an issue here\nAntigua, more emphasis must be paid to consuming more nutritious food to avoid\nnumerous diet-related diseases.<\/p>

\"\"<\/a><\/div>\n\n\n\n

Minister Jonas said that\nthe government is currently providing lunch to thousands of school children\nfree of cost and through the School Meals Programme and will be looking to\nexamine the possibility of offering additional meals for children, to include Breakfast.<\/p>

\"\"<\/a><\/div>\n\n\n\n

The Agriculture Minister\nsaid that at the last COTED Meeting, the ministers of agriculture were\ninsisting that the governments across the OECS and CARICOM should look into\nproviding breakfast for school children.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cThis is a matter that I\nwill be debating with my colleagues in cabinet to see if the government will be\nwilling to undertake that as well,\u201d Minister Jonas assured.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Minister Jonas in the\nmeantime called for a re-education campaign to be mounted to share information\nwith the general public about proper eating habits.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cWhat we need to do now\nis to increase our education on proper eating habits. There are still too many\npersons that are relying on fast foods\u2026junk foods to nourish themselves and\ntheir families and we need to re-education our population that this is improper\nand we need to pay more attention to nutritious, balanced meals to eliminate\nthe problem of NCDs in Antigua and Barbuda.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

World Food Day is being\nheld under the theme, “Our present actions will determine our future- A\nZero Hunger World by 2030 is still possible.”<\/p>\n
