The entertainers are among 150 Jamaicans who have been selected for national awards this year. The awards will be formally presented on National Heroes Day, in October.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

At the Independence Day Grand Gala at the National Stadium on Tuesday, Prime Minister Andrew Holness dubbed the men icons and hailed the work they\u2019ve done to popularise dancehall music around the world.<\/p>

Both \u2018Beenie Man\u2019, whose given name is Moses Davis, and \u2018Bounty Killa\u2019, given name Rodney Price, are trailblazers in the industry.<\/p>

\"\"<\/a><\/div>\n\n\n\n

Emerging in the 1990s, in an era considered the golden age of dancehall music, the artistes garnered acclaim for lyrics about the harsh realities of life growing up in the slums of Kingston.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Their paths would diverge, with Beenie Man finding popular acclaim in a type of popular dancehall that focused on lyrics detailing a party lifestyle and women.<\/p>

The style led many to dub Beenie Man the \u201cKing of the Dancehall\u201d, and made him a staple on the international scene. This culminated with Beenie Man winning the Grammy award for best Reggae Album in 2001 for \u2018Simma\u2019.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Meanwhile, Bounty Killa became the self-styled \u2018Poor People Govana\u2019, with his raw lyrics and aggressive delivery endearing him to the dancehall base.<\/p>

Songs like \u201cLook Into My Eyes\u201d and \u201cPoor People Fed Up\u201d, which detail the perils of poverty and violence, became staples of Bounty Killa\u2019s story telling and cultural impact.<\/p>

\"\"<\/a><\/div>\n\n\n\n

That impact extended to the development of several prot\u00e9g\u00e9s, including dancehall greats such as \u2018Vybz Kartel\u2019, \u2018Mavado\u2019, \u2018Busy Signal\u2019, and Wayne Marshal, who were all once a part of the super group known as The Alliance.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u206eBounty Killa also gained widespread international acclaim and won a Grammy as the feature artiste on No Doubts smash hit \u2018Hey Baby\u2019.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

As the two biggest names in dancehall, \u2018Bounty Killa\u2019 and \u2018Beenie Man\u2019, spent years at loggerheads, trading direct and indirect barbs, and \u2018clashing\u2019 for top spot.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The confrontation continued to escalate until the mid-aughts when both artistes shared a romantic connection with entertainer \u2018D\u2019Angel\u2019.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Beenie Man also sided with \u2018Vybz Kartel\u2019 in an infamous falling out between the deejay and \u2018Bounty Killa\u2019 in the lead-up to one of the most sensational and violent episodes in dancehall history.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

However, in later years, the entertainers buried the hatchet, famously appearing on the Covid pandemic-era Instagram show, Versuz, engaging in a playful dancehall clash that broke streaming records.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The Order of Distinction award is the latest thread connecting the two pillars of dancehall, something both men acknowledged in accepting the public proclamation from Prime Minister Holness.<\/p>\n
