On this historic day, we commemorate the moment at midnight on August 1, 1834, when approximately 32,000 plantation workers in Antigua were fully freed from the chains of slavery. Unique to Antigua, our ancestors did not have to endure an apprenticeship program; they gained full emancipation immediately.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Our ancestors’ fight for freedom was not just a battle against physical bondage but also a struggle against the mental chains that <\/a>held them. In their honor, let us commit to resisting any form of oppression that threatens our liberty today. Only then can we meaningfully sing the songs of freedom and honor the legacy of those who came before us.<\/p>
