This UN Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO) annual holiday has been celebrated since 2016. The theme for this year being \u201cRaising awareness about mangroves and their importance as self-sustaining ecosystems\u201d is a reminder to everyone that once left untroubled NATURE will and can take care of itself.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

We as custodians are required to desist from unconscionable <\/a>behaviour and activities that according to reports have caused one (1) percent loss or the degradation of mangroves. Additionally, these types of indiscriminate activities have already contributed to an estimated sixty-seven (67) percent destruction of these ecosystems globally. Sadly, mangroves are disappearing three to five time faster than terrestrial forests.<\/p>

\"\"<\/a><\/div>\n\n\n\n

We are to be mindful of the many purposes and importance the mangroves. Some of these are:<\/p>

\"\"<\/a><\/div>\n\n\n\n

Habitat for thousand of species to include both flora and fauna<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Stabilization of coastal or shoreline areas<\/p>

\"\"<\/a><\/div>\n\n\n\n

Prevents erosion<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Protection for the land and people dwelling in coastal areas from waves and storms<\/p>

\"\"<\/a><\/div>\n\n\n\n

Protection for the Coral reefs from sedimentation and other land-based contamination<\/p>

\"\"<\/a><\/div>\n\n\n\n

Clean water through its complex root system from nitrates and phosphates<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Supports rich biodiversity<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Provide carbon Sinks<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Mangroves were once called swamps or swampy wetlands but as time progressed scientists have revealed their importance and their roles in the natural environment. \u201cWe are working to protect mangroves and to better support scientific research into these environments. However, we cannot do this alone. We also need you\u201d, said Audrey Azoulay\/UNESCO Director-General. This appeal is applicable to everyone of us so let\u2019s all be involved in mangrove conservation today and beyond.<\/p>\n
