Evangelicals and the Abortion Law<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Our Evangelical Alliance (EA) seem more concerned about the abortion law than about abortion.<\/p>

\"\"<\/a><\/div>
\"\"<\/a><\/div>\n\n\n\n

Our current criminal law is ineffective.  It does not protect fetal life.  It does not stop abortions.<\/p>

\"\"<\/a><\/div>\n\n\n\n

It is inequitable, since it only affects the vulnerable – the poor and the young.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

It is harmful. It forces some women to take risks to end unwanted pregnancies.<\/p>

\"\"<\/a><\/div>\n\n\n\n

It discriminates against women even when they have been victims of violence, whether rape or incest.<\/p>

\"\"<\/a><\/div>\n\n\n\n

It discriminates because it absolves men from any responsibility whatsoever for unwanted pregnancies.<\/p>

\"\"<\/a><\/div>\n\n\n\n

Abortion is widespread in Antigua and the Caribbean: 65-74% of women will have at least one abortion by age 44.  Most of them will have more than one.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The law is unenforced but remains available for arbitrary abuse.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

About 80% of so-called teenage pregnancies are caused by men 20 years and older.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Sexual violence is endemic.\u00a0 At least 26% report experiences of forced sex, 19% have been abused by their partner and an appalling 19% report being sexually abused as a child.\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n

We can change the law and address these facts, or we can continue to deny this reality.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The EA worries that bringing the abortion law in line with our modern Constitution and international conventions we have signed would \u201cerode our nation\u2019s moral code.\u201d  Really? <\/p>\n\n\n\n

In the face of these data, which probably underrepresent the true sexual horror our women and girls encounter, what is the grand moral standard the EA seeks to protect? <\/p>\n\n\n\n

The Government must summon the moral courage to take actions that are decades overdue: Decriminalize abortion, foster sexual education, improve contraceptive usage and hold sexual predators accountable.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
