Limited access to public health services in St. John\u2019s Rural South has motivated community advocate, Jermaine Edwards, to bring quality health services directly to the people to help improve the quality of life in her community.<\/p>

\"\"<\/a><\/div>\n\n\n\n

As part of Community Health Improvement Week<\/em>, Edwards partnered with Dr. Damian Gordon of Blue Haven Medical Center to host a FREE Health Fair and Block Party last Saturday. The event was held at the Nut Grove Basketball Court and attracted scores of local residents who took advantage of free health screenings, health education and fitness activities on offer.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cGrowing up in St. John\u2019s Rural South we had to venture to clinics in neighboring communities to access health services. Very little has changed and the absence of a health clinic continues to limit residents’ ability to address prevention, diagnosis and treatment in managing our health,\u201d Edwards said.<\/p>

\"\"<\/a><\/div>\n\n\n\n

Dr Damian Gordon provided a range of health tests including: Blood Pressure Checks, Cholesterol Screening, Height\/Weight\/BMI Checks and Skin Exams.<\/p>

\"\"<\/a><\/div>\n\n\n\n

\u201cWe want to help raise awareness of many preventable health problems and to encourage early detection and treatment of many diseases,\u201d  Dr. Gordon said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

According to Jermaine Edwards, the health screenings and other services provided at the Health Fair were well received by the community.<\/p>

\u201cWe want to encourage residents to take charge of their health by making health care affordable and convenient. We invited a number of partners to assist in providing invaluable resources to our vibrant community. Together, we will empower each other to achieve our health and wellness goals,\u201d Jermaine Edwards said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Recognizing the importance of physical activity in improving overall health, the event also featured Socarobics<\/em> and fitness challenges with Dancerboy Shan of Groove It Right Fitness<\/em>. Attendees also had the opportunity to win prizes and free water and Gatorade were provided.<\/p>
