Ending the \u201cwar on nature\u201d must be part of global recovery from the COVID-19 pandemic, UN Secretary-General Ant\u00f3nio Guterres said on Tuesday in his message for World Oceans Day<\/a>. <\/p>

The annual commemoration on 8 June is a reminder of the major role oceans have in everyday life as \u201cthe lungs of our Planet\u201d and as a source of food and medicine.  <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Although this year\u2019s theme focuses on their importance for the cultural and economic survival of communities worldwide, the Secretary-General cited a recent report<\/a> which confirmed that many of the benefits oceans provide are being undermined by human activity.  <\/p>

Pollution, overfishing, acidification <\/h3>\n\n\n\n

\u201cOur seas are choking with plastic waste, which can be found from the remotest atolls to the deepest ocean trenches\u201d, he said<\/a>. <\/p>

\"\"<\/a><\/div>\n\n\n\n

But the list does not end there.  \u201cOverfishing is causing an annual loss of almost $90 billion in net benefits \u2013 which also heightens the vulnerability of women, who are vital to the survival of small-scale fishing businesses\u201d, he added. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cCarbon emissions are driving ocean warming and acidification, destroying biodiversity and causing sea level rise that threatens heavily inhabited coastlines.\u201d <\/p>

Sustainable Development link <\/h3>\n\n\n\n

World Oceans Day <\/a>falls as countries continue to confront the COVID-19<\/a> pandemic, the climate crisis and the ongoing assault on oceans, seas and marine resources, the Secretary-General said. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

With more than three billion people worldwide, mainly in developing countries, relying on the ocean for their livelihood, he called for action. <\/p>

\u201cAs we strive to recover from COVID-19, let\u2019s end our war on nature\u201d, Mr. Guterres said. <\/p>

\u201cThis will be critical to achieving the Sustainable Development Goals<\/a>, keeping within reach the 1.5-degree target of the Paris Agreement<\/a>, and ensuring the health of our oceans for today\u2019s and future generations.\u201d <\/p>\n\n\n\n
